Tell us about the success of these amazing hidden image pillows !
I listed these pillows days before my family and I left town for a week-long vacation in Canada. After a brief internal battle, I decided that instead of putting my shop in vacation mode, I would lengthen my production times so that I could still receive orders while we were away.
About halfway through our trip, my shop exploded. I sold dozens of pillows and made my mortgage and more within a week. It was the most exciting thing to me, and while I was through the roof ecstatic, I was jumping out of my skin and anxious to get home and start working!
The pillow sales soon steadied out, and I got a message from a woman asking me if I was capable of producing a large amount of pillows, and if so, what the production time would be. She initially told me she wanted 75 pillows. I texted my husband that I got a really big inquiry, but that I wasn’t getting my hopes up. If I’ve learned anything from owning an online business, it’s that scammers are rampant.
I continued to speak to this woman for a few days, discussing colors, styles and designs, and the longer we talked, the more I realized that this may be the real deal. I started getting excited! I emailed Heather Jones, one of the fantastic mentors in Flourish, and she helped me to stay focused, positive and proactive. She helped me through the entire process to keep my head on straight. This was really important to me, because I’d never even considered that I’d get such an order.
The initial order of 75 pillows continued to grow until we finally agreed on 205 pillows. I created the custom listing for my client and sat at the edge of my seat for hours, as anyone who owns an Etsy shop knows you do after creating a big custom listing. Soon enough, I heard the sound that made me jump out of my skin: “Cha-Ching”! The sale had gone through. I had just sold 205 pillows to a single customer.
How did “ Coffee & Sass” get its name? What inspired you?
I actually had help from a group of fellow artisan friends. I needed a new name that was fitting and appropriate for my shop, while still offering room for growth and expansion. My shop is filled with snarky mugs and other home items, so we thought Coffee & Sass fit perfectly. The name was inspired by a Zooey Deschanel quote: "I’m 80% coffee, and just a little bit of sass.”
How did Flourish help lead to your success ?
First and most importantly, Flourish taught me to believe in myself and my work. I’ve learned that the confidence (or lack thereof) that I have in myself exudes through me to my customers, so I need to have confidence in my work in order to sell. If I’m not confident in myself, no one else will be. Mindset is very important, and a positive mindset goes a long very way.
Flourish also taught me about branding, SEO, product photography, pricing psychology, copy, target markets, and so much more; more than I ever realized I needed to know to run a successful online business! Flourish has played such a big part in my success so far, and will continue to help me grow.

How do you see “Coffee & Sass “ continuing to Flourish? What are your future plans ?
I’ve recently started working with a local company to create unique promotional products. I’ve enjoyed it so much that I’ve been considering opening a second shop to work with small businesses making custom branded products. I’d also really like to get my work into more local brick & mortar stores.
I currently work out of my in-home studio, but I hope to continue flourishing to the point that I outgrow my little studio. I see Coffee and Sass eventually having its own building, possibly even storefront, with a dedicated workspace and shipping warehouse. The sky is the limit, and I’m going to reach as far as I can!
