1.) Tell us how you have grown Bluegrass Oils from an idea to where it is now?
I have always loved the idea of bath and body stuff. I hated how much time we spend making ourselves “look presentable” and wanted something to help me enjoy that time. When I started college, I was a Biology major and started to learn more about natural products and really liked the idea of them. One Christmas I decided to try my hand at making some sugar scrubs for gifts for friends-they turned out great! So I started making some for myself when I needed it. Then the next Christmas I offered to sell jars of sugar scrub for small Christmas gifts on my Facebook page. The response was overwhelming and it was the first time I had ever sold anything to make any sort of money. I was hooked. I thought “I can just list these scrubs on Etsy and make money.” So I tried that, and it was not successful. Being that I am always wanting to do better and grow, I buckled down and learned what I needed to do; and I am still learning! But I have taken some large strides between where I started and where I am now.
2.) What are your favorite blends to create? Why?
I have a love-hate relationship with bath bombs. If you’re not a patient person, don’t try to make them. One misstep and the whole batch is ruined! You have to start all over again. But, they’re the product I get the most creative with. That is one of the reasons I love to make them, along with how amazing my house smells after I have made a batch. I get to design fun color combinations, tweak different recipes and add in special ingredients to each batch. When a batch comes out looking amazing it is such a rewarding feeling. Plus, I always take a bomb from each batch for personal use, so that is an incentive too!
3.) What have you learned so far about business/creativity that you can share with others?
What I have learned is that not everything you believe in will be a best seller and also sell well. I also try not to get frustrated when I try something and it doesn’t work immediately. We all love immediate success, that’s how most infomercials get us. But life generally isn't that way. I often would rewrite my copy and redo my title and tags knowing how awesome they were. Then I would renew the listing and wait patiently for a sale. Is it on the front page of that search term? Yes, so why weren’t people buying it? I would sleep on it and when I woke up, my listing was already pushed to another page without a sale. It used to make me feel like the world hated my items and I would never make it. Sometimes it didn’t sell because no one was looking for that particular product at that time. A lot of times it has to do with photography. I can’t take a good photo to save my life, but I have worked and worked to the point where even though someone else may have better photos than mine, I still feel I have made a lot of progress since I first started. I will take that. Remember, you can only compare yourself to you because there will always be someone that is better than you at something. No one needs that kind of negativity, celebrate your accomplishments.
4.) How has Flourish helped or inspired you ?
Flourish has helped me understand the general outlines of what makes a successful business. I am a very direct and literal person (if you already couldn’t tell by my writing, haha!). When I would google what to do, it would be so broad like “pull your customers in". Well thanks, I would have never thought about that *sarcasm*. Flourish allows me to ask questions and gives me actionable steps to make my business one that is successful. You have a community of people who are all striving to make it, some I would argue have, and you can ask them for their input and expertise.

5.) What does the future look like for Bluegrass oils?
The future is looking bright for Bluegrass Oils! I am working on rolling out a new look and with that come new photos! I am hoping to have this done in time for Christmas season. I also am working on getting my items into more stores and setting up more wholesale clients.
